PHOTO COLLECTION INFO - The Balaton region of Hungary is the most nostalgic region for Hungarians as it is the place where they would probably have spent their childhood holidays. Hungary is land locked but it has the largest warm water lake in Europe. Under Socialism when Eastern europeans could not travel outside the Eastern Block, Balaton was the place to holiday. Unions and collectives built workers holiday complexes and the lake is ringed by beaches or "strands". Today Balaton is still the place where Hungarians rush to on a hot summers weekend from Budapest. The young Hungarians go to the resorts on the south of the Lake with Clubs and live a party life. The jet set go to their yaughts on the quieter north of the lake. Although Balaton still caters for mass tourism it is upping its image fast to cater for the wealthy. Around Balaton are many touist sites. Keszthely boast one of Hungary's great Baroque Palaces the home of the Festetics family and is open all year. Heviz is a famous health or wellness resort with the largest hot water thermal lake in Europe. The hot waters that pour into the Heviz lake are renown for their healing powers and are visited by millions of Hungarians, Austians and Germans all year round. Balaton produces fine Hungarian wines and the hills around the lake have vineyards producing fine wines. Badacsony is a well known wine town. Its vineyards run around a flat topped volcanic hill that is a Balaton landmark. Add to this castle ruins and a cemetry with interesting head stones and you can see why Balaton is so popular with the Hungarians.
